Jeremy B. Widder

Jeremy B. Widder is a partner at SoMD Criminal Defense and one of Southern Maryland’s most experienced criminal trial lawyers. He has tried more than 70 jury trials and hundreds of bench trials in Maryland courts.

From 2009 to 2018, Mr. Widder served as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Charles County, Maryland, where he tried some of the county’s most serious cases, including murder, attempted murder, rape, arson, burglary, robbery, vehicular manslaughter, drug distribution, assault, and DUI. He was named the office’s inaugural Assistant State’s Attorney of the Year in 2014.

Today, Mr. Widder uses that prosecutorial experience to defend clients facing the same kinds of charges he once filed. He earned his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 2009. While in law school, he represented clients in D.C. Superior Court and federal parole revocation hearings as part of the Criminal Justice Clinic, and clerked at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Greenbelt, Maryland.

From 2018 to 2020, Mr. Widder was an attorney with The Law Office of Hammad Matin in La Plata, Maryland. He successfully represented hundreds of clients charged with offenses ranging from DUI to Murder.

In 2020, Mr. Widder opened a solo criminal defense practice, which later grew into Southern Maryland Criminal Defense.

Mr. Widder is active in the local legal community. He is the President of the Board of Directors for The Jude House recovery center and is a past-President of the Charles County Bar Association. He also serves on the Peer Review Committee of the Attorney Grievance Commission. He is a member of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) in Charles County.

Mr. Widder has received recognition and coaching opportunities over the years to extend his experience and legal reach. In 2024, he was named to The Daily Record’s Criminal Law Power List. In 2025, he joined the Board of Directors for the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys’ Association (MCDAA).

Mr. Widder previously served as a trial advocacy coach at American University Washington College of Law, Georgetown University Law Center, and Temple University Beasley School of Law. He currently serves as the volunteer attorney coach for the La Plata High School mock trial team and judges intercollegiate mock trial competitions, including the American Mock Trial Association’s national championships.

Mr. Widder lives in Port Tobacco with his wife and daughter. In his free time, he enjoys growing vegetables, raising chickens, and kayaking.
